There are very good reasons for so many five star ratings. The warm heart of this place veritably oozes from the atmosphere, the service, the food. We arrived, a party of 7 with no notice and they accommodated us effortlessly. Most of us were experiencing Ethiopian food for the first time. Our kind server guided us through the entire menu. As it happened, the women indulged in anjera and vegetarian fare, using anjera in traditional fashion. Some items were definitely spicy. The men indulged in lamb and chicken. Not a bit was left on their platter. We all enjoyed everything immensely. At our server’s suggestion, I ordered a delicious, excellent Pinot noir. Another ordered a quite crisp and lovely Vigonier. I heard great exclamations over the clever house margarita that uses a traditional pepper which blends in an exciting way with lime and tequila. Get one.

Very good food, service and reasonable prices. I had the lentil sambusa for an appetizer, Asa Dulet which is a chopped spicy Tilapia with their very interesting and very good bread and Baklava for dessert. All were delicious and I was pleased with the service.

Vegetarian food review. I love it. The food is tasting even better than I remembered. The service is as usual.... Amazing. The lentils and vegetables and sambusas are my fav. I hope you love it just as much as I did. If you are with someone, order 1 platter. It’s perfect for sharing.

We have been fans of Ethiopian food for many years. In a town with a lot of it Abyssinian Kitchen stands out. Everything was fresh. Even collards were crisp and didn't taste stewed. Same for all the vegetables. The lamb was tender and impeccably seasoned. The enjira was fresh, and the slight fermented bite let us know it was traditional. The mocktail was complex, not syrupy, and hit the "cocktail" button. Dessert cheesecake was dense, cheese forward and fruity rather than just sugary. Service was attentive and prompt but not hovering. Atmosphere was relaxed and low key. This is one of our new favorites.

Great food. The beet salad was well spiced. The yellow peas were delicious. The mild cheese went well as a side to the red lentils. The drinks were solid. The atmosphere was warm, and the staff were friendly. Came in hangry and left in a good mood. Will come again.

Exquisite food, elegantly served in a warm, light setting. The injera had perfect texture. The lamb tomato stew, "Kilwa Beggie," was delicious, tender, hearty, and had a wonderful, complex, slow-burn heat that was very satisfying. Excellent. Would highly recommend.

Abyssinian Kitchen in Portland is a perfect place for anyone looking to experience authentic Ethiopian and Eritrean cuisine. I had the Beyaynetu, a vibrant and flavorful vegetarian platter featuring an assortment of lentils, vegetables, and perfectly spiced stews, all served atop soft, tangy injera. It's a feast for the senses and a great way to sample a variety of flavors in one dish. To top it off, I paired the meal with an African Amber beer from Mac & Jack's, which was a perfect match. The beer's smooth, malty notes complemented the rich, spiced flavors of the Beyaynetu beautifully. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the staff are friendly and attentive, making the whole experience feel like a celebration of culture and flavor.
